Aesthetic Dentistry: Tooth Whitening Kits, Composites & more

Aesthetic dentistry comprises all the treatment procedures which are aimed at improving the visual appeal of the teeth. Often also termed cosmetic dentistry, the focus of this branch is to increase the visual appeal of the teeth and its surrounding areas (gums). The procedures are generally non-invasive or minimally invasive, and generally only address the appearance of the smile and might not have any significant health benefits.

What are the dental procedures that fall under Aesthetic Dentistry/Cosmetic Dentistry?

Some common examples of procedures under this branch include – tooth bleaching or tooth whitening, repair of tooth structure using composites or veneers, orthodontic treatments using braces of clear aligners – which include diastema closures, reducing/eliminating gaps in teeth, organising the teeth to have a greater visual appeal, gum contouring/color correction, removal of white spots caused due to fluorosis etc.

These procedures ensure that the appearance of the tooth and face structure is enhanced without compromising on the functionality – and help boost confidence and make smiles bigger and beautiful.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs At Home Teeth Whitening

Tooth whitening is the most performed treatment procedure. The tooth whitening procedure can be either done in office (in clinic) by professional dentists or at home using take home dental bleaching kits.

Some key difference between both the procedures is represented in the table below:

Professional Tooth Whitening

At Home Tooth Whitening

Active Ingredient

Hydrogen Peroxide

(In concentrations of 30-40%)

Carbamide Peroxide
(In concentrations of 6-22%)

Procedure Effectiveness

Onetime procedure in clinic can lead to 2 shade whiter teeth

At home dental bleaching products are primarily used to maintain the shade of the teeth

Procedure

The teeth whitening agent are applied directly to the tooth.

A bleaching light maybe required to make the procedure faster.

The whitening tray material is then placed on the teeth

Duration

Certain Professional dental bleaching kits, such as Pola Office +, can give a 2 shade whiter smile within 30 minutes

At home dental bleaching products may be used for a period of 2 – 4 hours.

For best results, it is suggested to get teeth whitening done using professional teeth bleaching products in clinic – and at home dental bleaching kits, such as Pola Night kit, can be provided to the patients to maintain the whiter, brighter smile.

Dental Wedges & Dental Matrices

Dental Matrix Systems are used as a guide to support and form the composites during restorations using dental composite materials. Dental Matrices help mimic the natural anatomy of the tooth structure, while also ensuring a tight contact between the restored tooth and the neighbouring teeth.

Traditional dental Matrices, such as Palodent matrix system, Tor VM etc, are made of stainless steel. They are generally preferred for posterior restorations and are not preferred for aesthetic treatments.

The BioClear matrix system on the other hand are made of Mylar, thereby providing clear sectional matrices. There are a wide range of bioclear matrices which can be used specifically for anterior restorations and her hence preferred are suitable for cosmetic dentistry.

Some of these include, BioClear Anterior Matrices, BioClear Diastema Closure Matrices, Black Triangle Matrices, Veneer Matrices. These unique matrices ensure a perfect contact and a natural restoration.

Dental Composites and Veneers

Dental Composites are widely used for both cosmetic dental treatments as well as restorative dental treatments. Composites can be classified on multiple parameters, such as:

  1.     Based on the size of filler particles: micro composites, nano composites, microhybrid composites, nanohybrid composites etc.
  2.     Viscosity of the dental composites: Flowable composites, packable composites
  3.     Depth of Cure: Flowable composites or packable composites have a depth of cure of approximately 2mm.
Bulk Fill composites have a depth of cure of approximately 5mm.
  4.     Curing reaction: Light cured composites require UV light to initiate the polymerisation reaction, self-cure composites cure due to the chemical reaction that occurs when 2 parts are mixed, dual cure composites can be both light cured or dual cured.

Composites are made in multiple shades such as A1 to D4 – which enable professional dentists to closely match the shade of restoration the adjacent tooth.

New advancements include omni chromatic composites, which mimic the shade of the adjacent teeth and come in a single shade.

Veneers are also commonly used for smile enhancement and are generally a minimally invasive process. They can either be composite veneers or lab made ceramic veneers. Veneer are customized shells that are bonded to the teeth to improve their appearance.
